Review of Riedel Sommeliers Series Chablis-Chardonnay Glass, Packed in a Gift Tube

The glass looks great. But as I held it in my hand, and believe me please, gently dried the inside with a paper towel, the stem snapped in my fingers. I can't tell you just how little pressure was applied and now that's $60 bucks down the tubes after only 2 glasses of wine!

Product Description:
In the New World, especially, Chardonnay-s popularity stems from its creamy structure, which balances oakey, buttery flavors with low acidity. The variety produces wines of high alcoholic content, often aged in small oak barrels. Winemakers sometimes add tartaric acid to adjust for its low acidity. The Riedel Sommeliers Chablis-Chardonnay glass is designed so that this low acidity is delivered in a way that sets off the alcohol and rich flavors of the wine, highlighting its velvety, supple texture, emphasizing the fruit and ensuring a long, balanced finish. This classic Riedel shape allows young wines to express all their invigorating freshness, while more mature wines are encouraged to deliver the nutty, spicy, mineral flavors so typical of the variety. Recommended for: Albariño, Bourgogne Aligoté, White Bordeaux , White Burgundy , Chablis, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc,PinotBlanc, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris , Viognier, etc

Review of Riedel Vinum Chablis-Chardonnay Wine Glasses, Set of 2

I have used Riedel glasses for a while.I ordered from Amazon because of the good prices.Riedel stems are easily broken in our household. (Best to hand wash but I put them in the dishwasher :-() They are worth it, however!A friend recently commented that she loves to have wine at my house because of the glasses I use. They feel good.Wine is an experience that you need to have with Reidel glasses.

Review of Riedel Vinum Bordeaux, Set of 2

I have owned Riedel Vinum Bordeaux glasses for a decade and love them for their size, shape, clarity, and elegance. However, I have stopped purchasing them. Why?All one needs to do is look at them firmly and they break. My wife and I finally made a rule never to wash them after drinking any amount of wine. Then we escalated to not washing them if we were tired or distracted. Finally, we solved this ongoing problem by purchasing Spiegelau Vino Grande Red Wine Glasses recommended by a friend. At initial evaluation they look virtually identical to the Riedels, but on closer inspection are slightly thicker although an almost perfect match in shape. The feel is similarly elegant. The Reidels have been moved to the back of the cupboard. After breaking 3 or 4 Reidels per year, we have not broken a single similar Spiegelau in 2 years.

Review of Riedel Sommeliers Hermitage/Syrah Glass, Packed in a Single Gift Tube

I bought this glass for my wife (who has a great interest and enjoyment of good wine) as a Christmas gift.Last night, she tried out the glass with a friend. The reviews from both of them were quite something to watch. The wine from this glass tasted far, far superior to the same wine from an "ordinary" red wine glass. In fact, they poured the remaining wine from the "ordinary" glass into this glass and shared the glass all evening. There was really no doubt that this glass made the wine drinking experience a totally different, superior one.

Product Description:
" My first thoughts about a dedicated glass for Syrah", said Georg Riedel, "date from a visit I made to the Guidal family in 1992". Until that time, the Riedel family had always suggested another glass for Syrah. This Riedel Sommeliers Hermitage/Syrah glass was developed between 1993 and 1995 following tastings with many influential winemakers contributing their views. It is shaped to deliver the classic Syrah aromas of toast and black olives. On the palate, it brings out the wine's silky, velvety structure and balanced flavors. The tannins melt into the fruit, appearing sweet rather that acerbic on the back palate. Great for Syrah, Shiraz, Hermitage, Grenache, etc

Review of Riedel Syrah Decanter

Make no mistake, this decanter is plenty big to hold a full bottle (750 ml) of wine quite comfortably.I purchased this decanter from Amazon, and when I pour a full bottle of wine, the level comes up to the height corresponding approximately to the widest section. As I said, plenty of room for wine to breathe.Decanter is very light and elegant, glass has no lead, pouring is easy, no drips.Highly recommended.

This new Riedel Syrah decanter gets a thumbs up for beauty, value and functionality. This non-lead crystal decanter features a classic rounded base with sensual lines that graduate up the neck, while the pour spout has a special design that advocates a drip-free flow of your favorite vino. Decanting exposes the wine to more oxygen, thus allowing the bouquet to open up and mature, while the wines complexities are further enhanced. The process of decanting also allows any sediment to fall to the base of the decanter.

Review of Riedel Sommeliers Montrachet/Chardonnay, Single Stem

Some of the reviews of various Riedel Sommeliers series wine glasses are correct in commenting on their relative fragility, but the criticism isn't really deserved.First, these are handblown crystal--no two are alike, and yes, this does mean some glasses may be even thinner than others. And the Riedel Montrachet glasses are probably their thinnest. But "thinness" in a wine glass is a virtue and, for that matter, much more difficult and expensive to make than a thick glass.I won't take up your time with a long explanation here of why thinness is an essential quality in a wineglass, but the short of it is that it makes the wine taste better! The Riedel company did at one time have a very nice essay on the subject--it's probably still available on their website and it's worth reading.

Meanwhile, let me say this:Bad things happen in shipment, true, but the last glasses I ordered from Amazon came in beautiful Riedel shipping tubes that were, themselves, packed within an Amazon shipping box.So I think both Riedel and Amazon are doing their best with a fragile product. As to breakage by guests, which one critic commented upon: serve them with Riedel Vinum series or other less expensive glasses: if they can break a Sommeliers series glass by holding it, trust me, they'll never know the difference. Regarding washing: NEVER wash these glasses in a dishwasher (instant exploding crystal) and ALWAYS hold the glass when you're washing it by cupping the bowl lightly in your hand; avoid holding it by the stem.Be especially careful drying the glasses: again, don't twirl the glass by the stem (everyone who buys Riedel must do this once before we learn), and don't stuff the towel into the bowl--the result will be that the thinnest part of the glass, by design, which is the lip, will simply crumple.

This probably sounds dire and discouraging, but I've had Riedels now for about 20 years and we use them every day.I think in those 20 years we've broken 4 glasses. In my opinion, the taste superiority of a Riedel glass fully justifies the expense

Review of Riedel Vinum Syrah/Rhone Wine Glasses, Set of 6

We currently live in France, a country where wine is etched into the national consciousness. We invited some French friends over to compare Australian and French wines of the same grape varieties (chardonnay, cabernet, merlot), but didn't have enough Riedel glasses to go around. Some of us were consistently rating wines lower - and then we realised that they had the non-Riedel glasses. A quick tour of the table with the same wine in the two types of glass convinced everybody of the merits of this glassware. A TIP ON WASHING: one pain is the need to hand-wash these glasses. A sommelier gave us the tip that to avoid breaking Riedels while washing, do not hold the stem to turn the glass while cleaning it. Hold the whole bowl with one hand, while using a wash cloth with the other.

Product Description:
As seen in American Way:This shape was developed between 1993 and 1995 following tastings in the major Syrah growing regions, when most influential winemakers contributed their views on how the message of their wines should be put across. The wines made from the Australian grape variety Shiraz, give a deep purple, almost inky color. The nose resembles intense, rich blackberry aromas. The flavors on the palate show mouthfilling fruit, massive structure and a long, sweet finish. The shiraz/syrah glass highlights the tannins, offering a perfect balance with the overwhelming concentrated fruit. Each of these magnificent glasses is specifically designed to enhance a wine's flavor and bouquet. By customizing the shape of the glass to the characteristics of each grape variety, the wine is able to achieve its fullest expression. Elegance, lightness, and balance are the hallmarks of Riedel stemware. 9 1/4"H, 23 oz. Review of Riedel Vinum Port Glasses, Set of 6

I just picked up eight of these (Riedel 416/60) and found them to be the least well made Riedel Vinum glasses I've seen. Four of the eight stems had clearly visible casting lines down into the foot, and you could feel the ridge on all but one or two of the glasses.
I am also not fond of the large logo spelling out RIEDEL on the bottom of the glass.I didn't even like the smaller initials they used to use.I want to think about what I'm drinking; I don't need to be reminded who made the stemware.
Like the other Riedel glasses, the port glasses are extremely well balanced. For a glass so short with such a relatively large bowl, a thick, heavy foot is required for balance compared to the other glasses, which get away with relatively thin and light feet due to the leverage of longer stems and wider feet.Like their prestige cuvee champagne glasses, Riedel's port glasses are heavy, which feels nice in the hand, like good silver.
The Riedel port glasses are the preferred shape for port, and can be used for other port-like drinks such as Banyuls (which is a relatively inexpensive, long-lived, grenache-noir-based fortified wine that's worth seeking out, especially for pairing with chocolate).I also use the port glasses for dessert wines of all kinds. This matches what I see in restaurants worldwide and works well for me, even if Riedel has a series of other recommendations for various dessert wines. Riedel's least expensive line of glassware labels this shape simply as "spirits", so it's not a stretch to put them into service for whisky, cognac, etc.
Like all other heavy lead content crystal (24% here), be very careful washing them.Scratchy sponges, abrasive cleaner, grit in the sink, etc., will leave marks.

Review of Riedel Ultra 8-3/8-Inch Decanter

I bought this for a couple reasons; 1, it's made by Riedel, and 2, because of its shape. Not only is the shape a conversation topic but it also allows the wine to breath much more than if left in the bottle.I use my decanter for EVERY bottle of red I open, regardless of age.The vast majority of the wines I drink are "young" wines and really benefit from breathing in the decanter for 2 - 5 hours.
