Review of Spiegelau Vino Grande Champagne, Set of 2

I am wine collector w a sommeliers diploma - so I've done a lot of tastings over the past 20 years. Obviously the top league is held by Riedel - the old guy did his research on glass shapes (although debatable whether optimal for every varietal).
I find the Spiegelau's better value for money in the long run.

Pro's:
1. Thicker and more durable than Riedels. I used to wash Riedels in a dishwasher - some breakages resulted. The Spiegelaus are tougher.
2. Specific to the champagne flutes - I find the overall balance of the glasses very good. They are stylish, yet still functional in that the closing tulip preserves the flavors.

Cons:
1. Not Riedel?

Great value - good for every day use, but will still serve as excellent tasting glasses.

Bought this product to store wine on our boat and thought the dimensions would fit into a specific location. The crates were slightly oversized and didn't fit so we really haven't used them.They look great and are very rugged.The only negative I have is the vendor who shipped them must have stored them in an extremely dusty location because they were filthy when they arrived and had to be washed down.

I have owned Riedel Vinum Bordeaux glasses for a decade and love them for their size, shape, clarity, and elegance.However, I have stopped purchasing them.Why?All one needs to do is look at them firmly and they break.My wife and I finally made a rule never to wash them after drinking any amount of wine.Then we escalated to not washing them if we were tired or distracted.Finally, we solved this ongoing problem by purchasing Spiegelau Vino Grande Red Wine Glasses recommended by a friend.At initial evaluation they look virtually identical to the Riedels, but on closer inspection are slightly thicker although an almost perfect match in shape.The feel is similarly elegant.The Reidels have been moved to the back of the cupboard.After breaking 3 or 4 Reidels per year, we have not broken a single similar Spiegelau in 2 years.

Saw these in a vegetarian magazine and lpved what was shown as the red wine glass but for white wine in my house.The flanged rim makes these feel nice to drink from.They can be put in the dishwasher, because they are heavy thick glass, which I usually don't like, but the rim is not thick.There is a smaller version, supposedly for white wine, but the roundness of them seems more for red, to me.My go-to glasses are Tritan unbreakable crystal, but these are durable and festive.

I bought these glasses because collecting Waterford is a tradition in my family and I wanted something modern to fit my decor. The crystal is luminous, the design is elegant, the bowl of the glass is large and full. My only disappointment is that the stems aren't hand-pulled. With these glasses, I wanted something more upscale than Waterford "Vintage" but not so expensive as the mouth-blown series with gold in the stems. I realized that the bowl of the glass would be machine blown, but I was disappointed to feel seams along the stems.

Review of Riedel Spirit of O Spirits Glass, Set of 2

The five star rating reflects an appreciation for this purely as a spirits glass. When used for white wine, your hand warms the wine too quickly and if you're standing up at a tasting, you end up balancing the glass on the tips of your fingers. However, it is just the right size for a shot of spirits and the body warmth effect is a benefit.

A great deal of your experience of spirits comes from the aromas that develop in the air above the surface of the wine. A glass that forces the liquor to have a large surface area for its volume and then narrows to concentrate the vapors will increase the flavor experience. Glasses with a thin lip seem to interfere less with the taste of booze than thicker (and cheaper) glasses.The shape of the glass makes a difference, too. Since we can only smell molecules that are in the air, the best tasting glass is going to promote evaporation by exposing the largest possible surface area to the air. These glasses are wide at the waist and narrow at the top. Does it make a difference?You bet-and in every taste test that I've been part of, Riedel glasses win hands down.
