Review of Vacu Vin Waiter's Corkscrew

Upon seeing images of VacuVin's new Waiter's Corkscrew I was eager to buy them for myself and to sell in my wineshop. After having a chance to evaluate it I find that it is poor competition for even the standard model Pulltap's corkscrew. Both have hinged levers, cap-lifters, and foil-cutters.The VacuVin lever is clunky and requires a lot of manual dexterity to keep it on the lip of the bottle. The cap-lifter is equal to that on the Pulltap's.While I find it more ergonomic to have the foil-cutter on the same end as the hinge of the lever as the Pulltap's does, users with very short fingernails may prefer the exposed point of the Vacuvin to the indentation on the Pulltap's.As is usually the case when comparing corkscrews, the Pulltap's has the best worm; uniform in thickness and in the diameter of the spiral. The worm of the VacuVin is uneven in both thickness and spiral diameter; the maker declares no country of manufacture but I would place it as Chinese based on the worm alone (this is not a criticism, only an observation).Given a choice between the Pulltap's for around $8.95 or the VacuVin for around $12.95, I would obviously recommend for the former.

Review of Prestige Champagne Cooler Stainless steel

An excellent champagne chiller. I don't know that it's going to instantly cool a room temperature bottle in 5 minutes, but you can go from cellar temperature to serving temperature pretty quickly. It will keep a chilled bottle of champagnge cold for quite a while and it has the advantage of not making the bottle wet (as a traditional champagne bucket will) and there's no condensation out the outside. All in all, it works well and maintains a neat serving environment.

Review of Champagne Saver & Pourer

While one of the other reviewers states that it only works on some types of champagne bottles, I couldn't get it to work at all.I tried it on two different shapes of bottles, but to no avail. The problem is that the ring that is supposed to slide down the neck to secure the stopper doesn't slide when it's on the bottle. When off the bottle, the mechanism works fine.It appears to me that the stopper must be made for a specific bottle and not for most champagne bottles in general. At least that was my experience.I found a good $3.00 stopper at Sur la Table that works just fine and is not dependent on the shape of the champagne bottle. It doesn't have the fancy pour spout, but at least it keeps the bubbles in the champagne.

Review of Vacu Vin Rapid Ice Instant Wine Chiller (Red Grapes

Here's an important thing to know about wine:

Serving Temperature is one of the factors that affects the taste of wine and
is under your control. Tools that help you control serving temperatuer add to
your pleasure. Here are two ways to use this tool-

*You put it around a cold bottle to keep it that way. For instance, if you're carrying
white wine to a BYOB or a picnic, the sleeve will keep it at serving temperature.
It seems to last for about an hour and a half if it's wrapped with something insulating.

*You put it over a room-temperature bottle of red wine to cool it down to a proper
serving temp of around 60-65F.

At this low price, anyone who takes bottles of wine to friends or to restaurants should
have one.

Review of Rapid Ice Champagne Cooler

I love it. My friends love it. And finally a product made for Champagne bottles that actually fit a Champagne bottle! Just don't pay too much attention to that "Rapid" part. I would not use it on a warm bottle and expect a nice cool glass of the bubbly anytime soon. Keep it in the freezer until you need it. Then slip it over a chilled bottle to keep it chilled when you don't have an ice bucket handy.

Review of Vacu Vin Concerto Wine Saver Set

Of course you can't get all the air out of the bottle (a perfect vacuum), but I was surprised that this worked at all.Yet, with the partial vacuum this produces, the wine lasts noticeably longer.E.g. normally I'd find wine undrinkable after 3 or 4 days, but with this technology, it was drinkable and enjoyable (although not perfect... can still taste some oxidation.

I'd advise, particularly with a red wine, that you open a bottle, pour out a couple glasses you're planning to drink, then immediately seal up the bottle.Let the wine breathe in the glasses.

Keep in mind, if you half-empty a bottle, then that's a lot of oxidizing air that can ruin the wine. But, e.g. if I drink a glass of wine or two from a bottle, so there isn't much air in it, and use this to vacuum out the air, the wine will be drinkable a couple days later, whereas otherwise it wouldn't be.Usually, I use this to save wine for cooking, I must admit.

It works well and easily... you pump a few times until you hear a little musical clicking-like sound that tells you it's at full strength vacuum, which happens sooner or later depending on how little air is in the bottle.

So, my 5 star rating isn't saying "oh, the wine will be good a month later" or "you'll never tell the difference at all"... but I'm simply saying that it helps, and helps enough that I use it and like it.Which is all you can expect from wine anyway.Note, that I have a fairly good palate, I do have a fine ability to smell and distinguish tastes, but I'm no great conoisseur.I can certainly taste oxidation, however, and this helps quite a bit.

Review of Rapid Ice Wine Cooler Silver

This product works well for keeping an already chilled bottle cool at the table.Ours won't chill a bottle of white wine from room temperature to drinking temperature. It would probably work well for bringing a bottle of room temperature red wine down to cellar temperature. Our only freezer is the one in our refrigerator. It would probably work better if frozen in a chest type freezer kept at a lower temperature.

Review of Vacuum Wine Saver, Extra Stoppers 10 Pkg., 10/PK

These extra stoppers are for any bottle whose contents would benefit from reduced oxidation. Use them for juice, ice tea, sauces, ecc.

Looking at the reviews of this an other Vacuvin products, you see reports that are deeply contradictory. It's interesting that there is such a divergence of experience with such a simple product. The ideas behind Vacuvin are pretty simple.
First, air is the enemy of an open bottle of wine. Bacteria in the air want to turn alcohol into vinegar. The air itself oxidizes and dulls the taste of all but the most robust wines.
Second, you can remove some of the air with a simple pump and thereby slow down the rate at which wine deteriorates.

Why then, do we have both no-star and five-star reactions to this product?
Maybe the biggest source of disagreement is expectations. Vacuvin slows the deterioration of wine in the bottle, but it doesn't stop it.

Another possible reason for all the disagreement might be a question of temperature. The biochemical reactions that kill your wine are temperature sensitive. They proceed faster when the wine is warm and slow down when it's cool. Putting a pumped-out bottle in the refrigerator or wine cooler will slow down the spoilage processes and make Vacuvin more effective.
A third issue is the way the wine is handled before the Vacuvin plug goes in. If wine has a lot of air dissolved in it by being poured from decanter to bottle, there's no system that will keep it fresh.

Review of Vacu Vin Wine Saver

Yep, received the wrong stoppers too...
I ordered 2 sets of replacement ones for my dad who has the older VacuVin pump model. And like, apparently, everybody else I got the new ones.... Useless... I'm seriously wondering if they even have the older model in stock. Maybe they just send the new ones to all the "old timers" hoping thatit will motivate us to buy the new pump as well...
The one star is not for the product which is actually pretty good, but for the company that's pulling this very dishonest trick on us!
NOT HAPPY!

Review of Wine Saver gift pack black

This device is perfect for anyone who finds that they don't consume an entire bottle of wine at one sitting and would like to preserve the wine for as long as possible without it ruining.Wine can be an expensive luxury and there is nothing worse than having it turn to vinegar due to improper storage. This device is amazingly simple to use and works perfectly.Simply insert one of the rubber stoppers into the open bottle of wine, place the pump over the top and pump about 5 to 6 times until you hear a distinctive "clicking" sound and you are done. All of the excess oxygen in the bottle has now been removed and the wine is vacuum sealed. When ready to re-serve the wine, simply press the nib on top of the stopper to release the vacuum, remove and serve. It couldn't be any easier or simpler.Well worth the price and you may want to consider purchasing the extra stoppers if you tend to have more than a couple of bottles open at any one time.
