I got this for my spouse (as well as the non-travel style one) to replace a similar (off brand) that broke. He prefers using these Screwpull brand corkscrews. He appreciates that there is a very long screw thread so that when there is a cork that has broken this style of corkscrew always works. I'm not as thrilled, since in my smaller hands, everything feels more floppy, so I prefer the old-style heavy corkscrews that sit on top and have the 'wings'. But, when the cork crumbles on an old bottle, now we have no trouble extracting it instead of having to push it into the bottle.

I purchased this item on a whim because it looked like it would be fun to use, and after receiving it, I immediately tried it out.It failed to work on the first bottle, but has worked quite well on all subsequent ones.All I can assume is that the first bottle had a smaller cork than the others.

It is very easy to use, removes the cork with a few twists, and makes the cork pop out without any collateral damage.The champagne doesn't foam out of the bottle after the cork is released either.So if you like to have the cork pop out of your champagne bottles, but don't want any damage or harm caused by flying corks, such as dented walls or ceilings, broken dishes, etc. this is the tool for you.

I only gave it four stars because of the failure to remove the smaller cork, so it may not work with all bottles.But I've found it to be much more enjoyable and easier to use than other methods.

My husband and I went through many different types of corkscrews before receiving our first Screwpull model years ago as a gift (ours looked just like this one: Screwpull Table Model Corkscrew, Black, except that it was translucent brown in color).We were extremely impressed with the Screwpull!Unlike "rabbit ears" or other models, there is nothing to push or pull:you simply position the Screwpull over the cork, twist the screw part into the cork using the handle at the top of the unit, and voila!--the cork magically lifts into the Screwpull, seemingly of its own volition.The Screwpull never fails to remove even the most stubborn corks without any crumbling or debris.

Review of Screwpull Elegance Lever Model Corkscrew Gift Set

While this one's great, is there a good reason to pay so much when there are others just as good for around one-tenth the price (e.g., ASIN: B0006ABVK2)? I suggest you shop around unless you're buying this as a gift for someone who really knows wine, knows this brand name, and wants to show off for their guests.

Otherwise, when shopping for a corkscrew, the lever type like this is by FAR the best option. If you've never used a lever opener like this to open a wine bottle you don't know what you're missing.

I suggest getting one with mostly metal parts for durability and smooth, solid operation. Look for one that has spare worms or other spare parts, protective covers, a stand/box, and/or foil cutter included too. I really don't believe you have to pay more than twenty for a good lever opener--I paid ten for my zinc set with spare worm, cover, cutter, and storage box. It works perfectly, and I could buy a few great bottles of wine with the money I saved by not getting the Screwpull Elegance or another over-priced lever.

I bought one of these for my dad last christmas along with a few bottles of nice wine.
Well, the wine is gone now, but he still is raving about this cork puller.When dinner guests ask about it - I get mentioned!
Ihave used it myself and I have never seen such a smooth cork remover.Itdoes a perfect pull everytime.
After removing the metal on the top ofthe bottle.Just place the puller over the bottle, move the handle downand the screw slides right into the cork.Move the handle back up and thecork slides right out.Never breaks the cork and you don't end up shakingthe wine in the effort to get the cork out.
I don't think that there is abetter hand held puller out there.The next step up from this would be tobuy a table top mounted version - but then you don't get to open the bottlewith your guests.
