I've been working with this type of yarn a lot lately, and I don't like working with anything else. You don't have to be an experienced knitter to get good results with this yarn. I'm anything but that... I'm still pretty inexperienced, and more than a little impatient with large projects. The texture of the boucle yarn helps cover some mistakes, and the thickness of the yarn (along with some size 17 needles) means that projects knit up very quickly. It's also machine-washable, so it's good for everyday items as well as something special.
I recommend this type of yarn to every knitter, novice or experienced.
