Review of VacuVin wine saver, wine server and corkscrew set.

The corkscrew is good, especially for people with diminished hand strength. The other tools are useful too, but it's the vacuum pump that really makes a difference.

Looking at the reviews of this an other Vacuvin products, you see reports that are deeply contradictory. It's interesting that there is such a divergence of experience with such a simple product. The ideas behind Vacuvin are pretty simple.
First, air is the enemy of an open bottle of wine. Bacteria in the air want to turn alcohol into vinegar. The air itself oxidizes and dulls the taste of all but the most robust wines.
Second, you can remove some of the air with a simple pump and thereby slow down the rate at which wine deteriorates.

Why then, do we have both no-star and five-star reactions to this product?
Maybe the biggest source of disagreement is expectations. Vacuvin slows the deterioration of wine in the bottle, but it doesn't stop it.

Another possible reason for all the disagreement might be a question of temperature. The biochemical reactions that kill your wine are temperature sensitive. They proceed faster when the wine is warm and slow down when it's cool. Putting a pumped-out bottle in the refrigerator or wine cooler will slow down the spoilage processes and make Vacuvin more effective.
A third issue is the way the wine is handled before the Vacuvin plug goes in. If wine has a lot of air dissolved in it by being poured from decanter to bottle, there's no system that will keep it fresh.

Review of Ravenscroft Crystal Amplifier Unoaked White Wine Glass, Set of 4

I actually own the Amplifier Cabernet. So, the following review is based on the Amplifier Cabernet, but based on my HIGHLY positive experience with the Amplifier Cabernet, I feel very confident that many of the other Ravenscroft designs are VERY worthy designs and should be VERY comparable in excellence and quality.

-----------

I own a variety of Wine stems from a few makers including some of the "Finest" in the industry from higly regarded makers such as Riedel. And a fair number of other collectible fine crystal items.
Further, I have sampled many other fine wine stems on various occasions.

Arguably, Riedel is considered one of the finest for glass stems and a high benchmark standard in the industry. And I can't argue. I think they produce a fine product and I have been happy with the Riedel crystal I own.
However, Riedel's truly nice stems are VERY expensive.

I recently came across some very positive reviews of Ravenscroft's products and was very interested in the design of the Amplifier Cabernet.

I had recently sampled some fine red wines in a similar design with a large bowl that tapered to a smaller rim.
The design is highly effective at focusing the bouquet of the wine which adds a noticeable added level of enjoyment and appreciation when drinking a nice wine.

I could not find ANY retailer in the Houston, Texas area that carries the Ravenscroft line.

So, I ordered a set of 4 of the Ravenscroft Amplifier Cabernet stems.

As soon as they arrived and I removed from the well packaged box, I was instantly blown away.

The glass is quite light and delicate, but very "fine" and just SEXY - GORGEOUS!

Ravenscroft advertizes the benefits of using lead-free crystal - Claiming that lead can often leach into your drinks - which is hazardous and affects the flavor.

I honestly don't know about that - maybe so.
I have always been under the impression that leaded crystal was considered the finest. However, after receiving the Ravenscroft Amplifier Cabernet, I can personally say that Ravenscroft's crystal seems EVERY BIT as fine as some of my finest leaded crystal and in many cases the Ravenscroft crystal seems much nicer overall.

Quality of "crystal" aside, I also feel Ravenscroft's quality of craftsmanship was at among the highest I have seen for wine stems. And again, I find this Amplifier Cabernet stem to be one of the nicest wine stems I have come across AND easily my favorite for drinking out of.

Compared to MANY wine stems I have used over the years, in my opinion, the Ravenscroft Amplifier Cabernet stem is significantly superior in quality, shape and over-all presentation of itself AND of wine.

While Riedel may still be a very worthy "Benchmark" in the industry, I am INSTANTLY blown away by this product from Ravenscroft and compared to the best wine stems I have seen in the industry including the finest pieces from Riedel. I am familiar with Riedel's Sommeliers, Vitas, Vinum, Vinum Extreme and similar lines. In my opinion, only the Vitis and Sommeliers series "might" compare in quality, but I consider Ravenscroft:

*As nice in quality as the "finest" I have seen and handled from other makers,
*BETTER designs than most I have seen with the Amplifier Cabernet becoming an instant "FAVORITE"!,
*And a MUCH better value compared to other comparable quality stems.

I honestly wouldn't pay the high prices for Riedel's Vitis and Sommeliers level stems.
Ravenscroft offers at least as nice and in many ways NICER product than Reidel's highest priced lines (Vitis and Sommeliers) and at a price less than even the Vinum Series - with Ravenscroft's stems being significantly nicer than Riedel's Vinum and Vinum Extreme series (in my opinion).

I will MOST likely have to purchase more of these stems as gifts eventually.
I expect quite a few people to "Covet" mine.

The pictures do NOT do the glass justice. You really need to "Experience" the glass to fully appreciate!

Review of 6 Pc. Silver Rabbit Wine Tool Kit by Metrokane

. . . this could be right for you.

All you really need here is the corkscrew, but the other bits-foil cutter, stopper ecc. do make a more imposing gift. Be aware that the increased number of moving parts means that the Rabbit (and all its kin) are more likely to break than the simpler corkscrews.

Wine used to be stored in wood and sold by the pitcher, or bucket-full. Strong glass bottles came along in England in the 1660's. At first, they were stoppered with glass, each stopper being ground individually to fit its bottle and then tied in place. Uniform plugs of cork gradually replaced the custom-tailored glass. The cork, exported from Portugal, was inserted for half its length in the bottleneck, and the consumer twisted it out.
The corkscrew appeared a few years later, at the end of the century, and corks could then be driven flush with the bottle's neck.
We are a people with too much time on our hands so it's not surprising that we have generated at least a hundred variations on the corkscrew. The only thing that matters is this: the business end of a corkscrew, called the worm, should be a wire formed in a spiral. (See illustration.) Corkscrews with stamped worms that resemble wood screws should be rejected, shunned, even anathematized. Here's why. The wire displaces the least amount of cork and gives the greatest amount of lifting surface. The stamped worm drills a hole in the cork and offers only its edges for lift. If the cork is old, or soft, this latter arrangement can leave you with a half a crumbled cork in the bottle. The wire is slim and makes a spiral that's wide enough to slip a paper match inside. The tip is pointed and sharp.

Review of Vacu-Vin Rapid Ice Wine Chiller

This clearly is not the "invention of the century", but it does keep its promises. I store mine in the freezer and use it when (a) we take a bottle of wine or Mona Vie out of the cooler and want to keep it chilled for a few hours, or (b) when we want to quickly cool down a bottle that has been at room temperature.
Inexpensive, and does its job. I'm here on Amazon to order 3 more (so I can take chilled sample bottles of Mona Vie to my prospective distributors).

Review of Mini Wine Enhancer

I bought this expecting it to do nothing but thought it might be good for some entertainment. I ran a double blind test with my husband. We enhanced one glass of a young red, and allowed another identical glass to sit for the same length of time.

We were both shocked that there actually was a difference in the two glasses. The enhanced one tasted softer and had a little less burn. The smell of the wine was drastically altered. Sadly we thought the enhanced one lost a little of its fruit, but overall it was improved.

I have no idea what it does, or how it does it, but as shocked as I was, I have to admit it does do something
